[ Katherine Black Shields ]


Katherine Black Shields holds the Doctorate of Musical Arts and Master’s in viola performance from Arizona State University, and the Bachelor’s from Northwestern University. A native of Chicago, she began her viola studies in the Glencoe, IL public schools and attended Indiana University. Her principal teachers include William Magers, Lee Lane, William Schoen, Robert Swan, George Janzer, and Karen Tuttle.

Dr. Shields currently plays with the Arizona Opera Orchestra and has been a member of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix String Quartet, Flagstaff Festival Orchestra and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Before returning to the Phoenix area in 1992, she spent eight years in Orlando where she performed solo and chamber music programs while a member of the Florida Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Shields has been a faculty member at the string chamber music camp “Chamber Music in the Mountains at Echo Glen” (Mt. Lemmon, AZ).
