[ Keith Johnson ]
Dr.
Keith M. Johnson has been the horn teacher at The University of Arizona
of Music and Dance since the Fall of 1975. Before coming to Tucson, Dr.
Johnson taught in colleges and universities in Texas, Indiana, and
Florida, as well as public shcools in California and Minnesota. His
professional performance experience includes work in symphony
orchestras, recording studios, opera productions, and brass and wind
chamber music. In addition, he has performed solo recitals and given
master classes and clinics throughout the country.
Dr. Johnson is a founding member of the Arizona Wind Quintet, and
continues to perform with that faculty ensemble. He has also held the
principal horn position of The Arizona Opera Orchestra for nearly
twenty-seven years, and continues to perform with that company regularly
in Tucson and Phoenix.
Dr. Johnson's principal horn studies have been with some of the
well-known horn and brass teachers and players in the country. He
received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Luther College where he studied
under Dr. Robert Getchell, nationally known brass authority. In
California he studied with James McGee, studio hornist. Dr. Johnson's
Master of Music degree in Horn Performance was taken at the University
of Southern California, where he studeied with Wendell Hoss. Dr.
Johnson's doctoral work with Philip Farkas was done at Indiana
Uhniversity. There, he was also privileged to study brass pedagogy with
Louis Davidson and Charles Gorham (trumpet), Keith Brown and Lewis Van
Haney (trombone), and Harvey Phillips (tuba). Additional work has been
with James Decker, Fred Fox, Gail Williams and Dale Clevenger.
While at The University of Arizona, Dr. Johnson has taught horn
performance studies, brass pedagogy, conducting, and music education
courses. He has also conducted the Brass Choir and regularly coaches
student chamber music. He was the tuba instructor for four years, and
continues to teach all the brass instruments in a recently constructed
music studio at his home.
