[ Margaret Gilmore ]

Margaret Gilmore, cellist, has been a member of the Arizona Opera Orchestra since 1985, with the exception of a few years off in the early 1990's. She has played in opera orchestras since she was a teenager - first back in her home state of Louisiana. She studied at the Juilliard School as a young child, soloed with the New Orleans Philharmonic and eventually got a B.M. from LSU, a M.M. from Rice University and her D.M.A. from the University of Arizona. She also studied at the Muziek Lyceum in Amsterdam, with Tibor deMachula - principal cellist of the Concertgebouw Orkest .

She was assistant principal cello with the Utrecht Sinfonie Orkest (David Zinman, conductor) and also with the Omroep Orkest (Netherlands Broadcasting System), living in The Netherlands for about 6 years, studying and performing. She has been principal cellist with numerous regional orchestras and performed in many chamber music series and summer festivals. She also played and taught in Los Angeles, doing studio recording and chamber music there , including the Los Angeles Modern String Orchestra, Master Symphony, The Baroque Consortium, Santa Barbara and Burbank Symphonies in the early 80's. She has played in professional opera companies in Europe and also in Mexico City, studied in Vienna with a National Endowment for the Humanities grant for a Mozart Seminar and also studied viola da gamba there.

She was a participant in the Lake District Summer Music Festival in Ambleside, England, the Baroque Music workshop at Stanford University and the Houston Festival. She was visiting associate professor at LSU in 1980 and the string coach at Gendale Community College in Glendale, CA. She was also a contributor to "Frank Martin: A Bio-Bibliography" by Charles King in which she translated articles from Dutch, to English. Margaret is a registered Suzuki teacher and is teaching and playing in Vermont when she is not in Arizona.
