[ ABOUT AZOOMA ]

The Arizona Opera Orchestra Musicians Association (AZOOMA) is an organization of highly trained orchestra musicians with the Arizona Opera. We are independent from the Tucson, Flagstaff or Phoenix symphony orchestras.

AZOOMA aims to deepen its commitment to our local communities and their arts organizations. As one of the few large performance ensembles active in Arizona, we strive to strengthen these bonds on multiple levels - artistic, cultural and personal.

Performing in an opera pit requires unique skills different from those of playing onstage. The musicians of AZOOMA are dedicated, specialized musicians who help raise the Arizona Opera experience to world-class.

AZOOMA's MISSION IS:

  • To offer entertaining, live music performed at the highest artistic level for our community

  • To promote and support our musician colleagues - their activities and livelihoods

  • To raise awareness and reach out to the community in support of the Arizona Opera and its programs

We are proud members of the American Federation of Musicians (a branch of the AFL-CIO) and have earned bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees from some of the world’s finest conservatories and universities.

This web site was created to spread the word about opera, the talented opera musicians and how we continue to be a vital and integral part of Arizona's cultural life. We ask you to join us in helping Arizona Opera as a vital and important component in Arizona's cultural attractions.

A unique feature of the Arizona Opera Orchestra is that the musicians represent the company's history.

While not the primary "product," AZOOMA has a strong and vested interest in the company and its future. Singers and conductors, managers and directors come and go, while some members of the orchestra have been around since the inception of the company in the early '70's.

In 1998, Arizona Opera set in motion a plan to nurture and expand the artistic excellence of the company. This included innovative sets, costumes and lighting, the engagement of the talented young artists and an "in-house" orchestra with an expanded rehearsal schedule.
